My Skills:
I am Joseph Murphy, a passionate reporter, videographer and written language specialist, currently based in Sheffield.
The world around us always has a story to tell and I choose to capture moments in order to inform, to move and to inspire viewers. I believe that the best and easiest way to do this is by visually capturing the experience of people and their reality.
Since beginning my training as a journalist at the University of Sheffield's MA Journalism course, my eye for stories has sharpened, leaving me regularly asking: "how can we show this to the world?"
During this time, I began to specialize in filming and compiling video packages and narratives, examples of which can be seen in the articles section. Within this section, my written articles can also be seen, showcasing my written craftsmanship, something i have been honing since my undergraduate degree in English literature.
I picture myself as a people person, not afraid to ask the right questions to get to the bottom of the story but also able to treat situations with the required sensitivity and humanity needed for a journalist. We should be humans first, journalists second.
I began my journey into the world of journalism by joining Forge, the University of Sheffield's press and publication organisation. Within this I ran my first weekly radio show, quickly moving up to become Head Producer of one of the subsections of Forge Radio.
During this time, I also put my linguistic and journalistic skills to the test for the first time, creating my first articles. I found that
Soon after, I joined Forge TV becoming a part of the reporting team for a weekly news show, demonstrating global news and its effect on the local area, as well as more community based narratives. It was here where I experienced journalistic deadlines for the first time, working under editorial constraints, alongside collaborating with other members to produce the weekly news package.
Since then, my love for the profession, my dedication and my discipline have only grown. One of my main interests was the local council's work with for community improvement in the Gleadless Valley area, which can be seen in my articles section. It was here where i first experienced working with authorities and government officials, gathering statements, statistics and comment from Councillors and local residents board members.
